Pentagon in Crisis as Hegseth Purges Black and Female Generals, Undermining Military Leadership
Since January 2025, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired or forced out 24 top generals and commanders, disproportionately targeting Black and female officers without cause. Insiders warn this purge, echoing Stalinist tactics, fractures military cohesion and risks operational readiness amid escalating tensions with Iran.
The Pentagon, once seen as the "adults in the room" restraining reckless presidential impulses, is now reeling under an unprecedented wave of purges led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Since Donald Trump’s return to office in January 2025, Hegseth has ousted 24 senior officers, including some of the military’s most respected Black and female leaders, with no performance-based justification.
This purge, described by insiders as reminiscent of Stalin’s brutal military purges, disproportionately targets Black and female officers—about 60 percent of those removed fall into these categories. The latest casualty was Army Chief of Staff Gen Randy George, reportedly dismissed after refusing Hegseth’s directive to exclude four officers—two Black men and two women—from promotion lists.
The purge began with the firing of General CQ Brown, the first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replaced by Dan Caine, a hastily promoted three-star general whose qualifications many question. Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to serve as Chief of Naval Operations and on the Joint Chiefs, was also removed.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host with no extensive military command experience beyond National Guard service, has openly criticized “woke” diversity initiatives, blaming previous Pentagon leadership for unhealthy focus on race and gender. At a Senate hearing, he denied Trump’s involvement in targeting minority officers but doubled down on his disdain for diversity efforts.
Inside the Pentagon, Hegseth is increasingly isolated, relying on a close-knit circle including his wife Jennifer, brother Phil, and a few trusted advisers. Meanwhile, Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg, a billionaire investment firm owner, manages much of the department’s daily operations.
Military analysts warn the purge aligns with Project 2025, a far-right Heritage Foundation plan to ideologically cleanse the armed forces and ensure loyalty to Trump personally rather than to the Constitution. Retired Major-General Paul Eaton compared the firings to Stalin’s pre-WWII purges that crippled Soviet military effectiveness.
Eaton and others express grave concern that these removals damage senior military leadership cohesion and create a climate of fear where officers hesitate to speak truth to power. This is especially dangerous as Trump threatens devastating attacks on Iran’s civilian infrastructure, raising fears of war crimes or genocide.
Veterans worry about the impact on rank-and-file morale and the capacity of newly installed leaders like Caine to resist reckless orders. The Pentagon’s internal turmoil under Hegseth’s tenure threatens not only military readiness but the very principle of civilian control anchored in constitutional loyalty.
As the Pentagon descends into disarray, the nation faces the stark reality that its last line of defense against authoritarian impulses is eroding from within. The purge of experienced, diverse military leaders for ideological conformity is a direct assault on the integrity and effectiveness of the US armed forces.
