Pentagon Threatens New Probe Into Sen. Mark Kelly Over Missile Stockpile Comments

Senator Mark Kelly is once again under threat of Pentagon investigation after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused him of revealing classified information about American weapons stockpiles. The latest clash erupted following Kelly’s appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” where he warned that recent Pentagon briefings showed a significant depletion of U.S. missile inventories, including Tomahawks, ATACMS, and Patriot missiles.

Kelly, who sits on both the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee, bluntly stated, “We’ve expended a lot of munitions,” adding that this depletion “means the American people are less safe.” His comments came amid heightened tensions surrounding U.S. military operations related to the Iran conflict and concerns about potential future engagements with China.

Hegseth responded sharply on social media, questioning whether Kelly had “violated his oath…again” and announcing that the Department of Defense’s legal counsel would review the matter. The Defense Secretary accused Kelly of “blabbing on TV” about sensitive Pentagon briefings. Kelly fired back on Twitter, pointing out that his statements were direct quotes from Hegseth himself, and underscored the serious toll the ongoing war effort is taking.

This confrontation is not the first between Kelly and Hegseth. Earlier this year, Hegseth sought to punish Kelly administratively after the senator urged military personnel to reject illegal orders. Kelly sued to block those retaliatory actions, and a federal judge ruled that the Pentagon’s threats to reduce his military retirement benefits were unconstitutional.

Independent analyses back Kelly’s warnings. The Center for Strategic and International Studies reported that nearly half of the U.S. Patriot missile interceptors had been used by late April, a figure reportedly consistent with classified Pentagon assessments.

The Pentagon has declined to comment beyond Hegseth’s public statements, and Kelly’s office has yet to respond to inquiries about the new investigation. This ongoing feud exposes deep fissures within the military and political establishment over transparency, accountability, and the true costs of America’s military engagements.
