Pentagon-Vatican Meeting Sparks New Clash Between Trump Administration and Religious Leaders

The Trump administration’s growing habit of mixing divine authority with military policy has hit a new flash point following a controversial Pentagon meeting with the Vatican. According to a report by The Free Press citing unnamed Vatican sources, U.S. military leaders summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre, then-Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S., to the Pentagon in January and pressured him to align the Catholic Church with the government’s military stance. Though the Department of Defense confirmed the meeting took place, it dismissed the report as “highly exaggerated and distorted,” insisting the discussion was “respectful and reasonable.”

This episode is the latest in a series of clashes between Trump’s team and religious leaders who reject the administration’s weaponization of faith. Vice President JD Vance, speaking in Hungary, initially feigned ignorance about Cardinal Pierre before backtracking and promising to investigate the claims. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth openly credited “divine providence” for a fragile ceasefire with Iran, echoing President Trump’s own assertions that God supports U.S. military actions.

The pope and other faith leaders have pushed back hard. Pope Leo XIV condemned Trump’s threat to “eradicate” Iran’s “entire civilization” as “truly unacceptable” and called for peace, urging citizens worldwide to contact their representatives. His Easter message urged disarmament and prayer for peace, sharply contrasting with the administration’s belligerent tone.

This growing “war theology” from the White House risks deepening divisions not only abroad but within America’s religious communities. It underscores how Trump’s blending of spiritual rhetoric with military aggression is alienating faith leaders and raising alarms about the misuse of religion to justify authoritarian and violent policies. As tensions with Iran remain fragile, this clash between the Pentagon and the Vatican signals a dangerous escalation in the administration’s assault on democratic norms and religious integrity.
