Pentagon Warns Iran: Block Strait of Hormuz and Face “Overwhelming Firepower”
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth declared Iran the “clear aggressor” in the ongoing Strait of Hormuz standoff, warning Tehran that any attack on commercial shipping will be met with overwhelming force. The US launched Operation Project Freedom to protect global shipping lanes, underscoring Washington’s refusal to let Iran hold the world economy hostage.
The Pentagon is doubling down on its hardline stance against Iran’s recent harassment of ships in the Strait of Hormuz. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth made it clear on Tuesday that Iran “cannot be allowed to block innocent countries and their goods from an international waterway,” signaling a zero-tolerance policy for Tehran’s attempts to disrupt this critical maritime passage.
In a press conference alongside Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen Dan Caine, Hegseth labeled Iran the “clear aggressor” after weeks of escalating attacks on commercial vessels. To counter this, the US has launched Operation Project Freedom, a temporary mission aimed solely at protecting innocent shipping from Iranian interference. Hegseth emphasized that the operation does not require US forces to enter Iranian airspace or waters, yet it involves establishing a protective “dome” over the strait to ensure safe passage.
This move follows Iran’s repeated provocations, including missile, drone, and small boat attacks on US forces, which were successfully repelled just days ago. According to Gen Caine, Iran’s strategy is to weaponize the global supply chain, effectively holding the world economy hostage by trapping 22,500 mariners aboard 1,550 commercial vessels unable to transit the Gulf.
Despite the US blockade on Iranian ports remaining “iron-clad,” six ships recently attempted to break through from Iranian ports but were stopped by US forces. The Pentagon reports ongoing coordination with CENTCOM, partner nations, shipping companies, and insurers as hundreds more vessels line up to navigate the strait.
Hegseth’s blunt warning to Tehran is clear: continued aggression will be met with “overwhelming firepower.” The US insists it is “not looking for a fight,” but it will not tolerate Iran’s attempts to choke off an essential artery of global commerce. This confrontation is the latest in a pattern of authoritarian brinkmanship by the Iranian regime, with Washington positioning itself as the bulwark defending international trade and economic stability.
As tensions escalate, the stakes could not be higher. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Any disruption threatens not only regional security but also the global economy. The US government’s aggressive posture signals a readiness to hold Tehran accountable and maintain open seas in the face of intimidation and coercion.
