Pete Hegseth Dodges Whether He Would Obey Trump’s Order to Deploy Troops at Polls

During a tense House Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth repeatedly sidestepped a straightforward question: Would he obey an order from former President Donald Trump to deploy troops at polling locations during the midterm elections?

Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-Hawaii) pressed Hegseth on whether he would comply with such an order, referencing Trump’s own chilling remarks to The New York Times where he expressed regret for not seizing voting machines in swing states after his 2020 loss. Instead of a clear yes or no, Hegseth deflected, accusing Democrats of insinuating that Trump would issue illegal commands. He touted the Defense Department’s cooperation with law enforcement during recent unrest but refused to address the core concern: the risk of using military force to influence elections.

When Tokuda asked again, “Who would you follow, the president or the Constitution?” Hegseth pivoted to an unfounded claim that President Joe Biden deployed National Guard troops to polling places in 15 states during the 2024 election. This was quickly debunked by The Hill, which clarified that those activations were state-level decisions, not federal orders from Biden.

Despite multiple attempts to get a direct answer, Hegseth would neither confirm nor deny that he would refuse an order to militarize polling sites. This non-answer is a red flag given Trump’s history of undermining democratic norms and his open flirtation with authoritarian tactics.

The refusal to commit to upholding the Constitution over a president’s potentially illegal order exposes a dangerous vulnerability in the chain of command. It signals that the Defense Department might be willing to participate in election interference if ordered, a scenario that should alarm every American who values free and fair elections.
