Poll Shows Trump Takes Heat for Soaring Gas Prices as Democrats Surge Ahead in Midterms
A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll reveals that over 80% of Americans say high gas prices are straining their budgets, with a strong majority blaming President Trump. The fallout from economic pain and the unpopular Iran war has pushed Trump's approval to record lows, giving Democrats a solid 10-point lead heading into the midterm elections.
A fresh poll conducted by NPR, PBS News, and Marist paints a grim picture for President Trump’s standing with voters as the midterm elections approach. With gas prices surging to an average of $4.48 per gallon nationally—up sharply from under $3 before the Iran war—more than 8 in 10 Americans report that the cost at the pump is putting a real strain on their household budgets. Crucially, 63% of respondents squarely blame Trump for these price hikes, including a significant one-third of Republicans.
This economic squeeze is reflected in Trump’s plummeting approval ratings. Just 37% of Americans approve of his overall job performance, while 59% disapprove—the worst mark he has ever received in this poll. The intensity of opposition is striking, with 51% strongly disapproving. Key voter groups that once supported Trump—such as white non-college-educated men and women, millennials, and lower-income households—have shown sharp declines in support.
The poll also highlights widespread dissatisfaction with the economy, with 63% saying it is not working well for them personally, and 56% labeling their local area as unaffordable. This economic discontent crosses party lines, affecting even Republicans who once formed Trump’s base. Trump’s handling of the economy is at a historic low approval of 35%.
The unpopular war in Iran compounds Trump’s troubles. Only 33% approve of his management of the conflict, while 61% believe the military action has caused more harm than good. Furthermore, 62% of respondents feel Trump’s decisions have weakened the United States on the global stage.
All these factors have translated into a notable midterm advantage for Democrats. When asked whom they would vote for if congressional elections were held today, 52% favored Democratic candidates versus 42% for Republicans—a 10-point margin that signals a potential wave election. Democrats also hold a lead in voter enthusiasm, critical in midterms where turnout typically drops.
This poll underscores the political cost of Trump’s economic and foreign policy decisions. As gas prices bite and global tensions rise, the administration faces growing voter dissatisfaction that could reshape the balance of power in Congress this November.
