Republicans Block Democrats’ Bid to Stop Trump’s Escalating War Threats on Iran
House Democrats tried—and failed—to pass a resolution to halt Trump’s dangerous military brinkmanship with Iran after his shocking vow to destroy “a whole civilization.” GOP lawmakers refused to even allow a vote, leaving Congress sidelined as Trump pushes the U.S. closer to war.
House Democrats returned to Washington during recess to urgently demand a vote to rein in President Trump’s escalating war threats against Iran. Their effort followed Trump’s unprecedented warning that he would annihilate “a whole civilization” unless Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane. But Republican leadership shut down the attempt before it could get off the ground.
Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) and other Democrats sought unanimous consent to pass a resolution to halt Trump’s military actions. Instead, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), presiding over the brief pro forma session, abruptly ended it without calling the motion. Democrats erupted in protest, shouting “Shame!” as the GOP stonewalled any congressional check on Trump’s reckless brinkmanship.
Outside the Capitol, Democrats blasted Trump for threatening civilian infrastructure and pushing the U.S. toward a catastrophic war that the American people have neither authorized nor want. They called on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to cut short the recess and bring the full House back for a decisive war powers vote. Johnson has ignored these demands, continuing a pattern of absence while the nation edges closer to conflict.
The White House claims it remains “in control,” but Trump’s erratic behavior has alarmed even some conservatives. Calls for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from power have gained traction among Democrats and disillusioned former allies like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Yet the Cabinet and Vice President JD Vance have so far refused to act.
Trump briefly backed down from his threat, announcing a two-week ceasefire with Iran brokered by Pakistan. But he warned that if no “REAL AGREEMENT” is reached soon, “the ‘Shootin’ Starts,” promising a military response “bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before.” This chilling rhetoric has only intensified calls for Congress to reclaim its constitutional authority over war.
Next week, with Congress back in session, Senate Democrats plan to force a vote on a War Powers Resolution that would require congressional approval for further military action in Iran. The GOP-controlled Senate has repeatedly blocked such measures, but Democrats hope to pressure Republicans alarmed by Trump’s increasingly dangerous conduct.
This crisis is not just about foreign policy—it’s about holding a president accountable who openly threatens mass destruction and flouts democratic checks and balances. The refusal of Republican leaders to confront Trump’s warmongering leaves the nation on a knife’s edge, with Congress sidelined and the world watching.
We will keep tracking every move as the Trump administration pushes America closer to war under a cloud of recklessness and denial. The clock is ticking, and the stakes have never been higher.
