Rev. Dr. Bernice King: America’s 250th Anniversary Is Not a Time for Celebration, But Reckoning

As America hits its 250th anniversary, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center and daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., delivers a sobering verdict: it is difficult to celebrate a nation still wrestling with deep inequality and attacks on democracy.

In a recent interview on WABE’s “Closer Look with Rose Scott,” Dr. King connected the dots between the country’s troubled history and the present moment, which is marked by a stark rollback of voting rights protections. She specifically addressed the Supreme Court’s April 2026 decision in Louisiana v. Callais, a 6–3 ruling that struck down a Louisiana congressional map and severely curtailed the scope of the Voting Rights Act (VRA).

The ruling makes it harder to challenge racial gerrymandering under Section 2 of the VRA by limiting the creation of majority-minority districts. Civil rights advocates warn this will diminish minority voting power in upcoming elections and further entrench racial disparities in political representation.

Dr. King did not mince words about the forces behind these setbacks. “One of the tragedies still of human history is that the children of darkness are often more zealous and determined than the children of light,” she said, quoting a lesson from her father. She highlighted how those intent on undermining democracy “work overtime” and pointed to Project 2025 as a prime example — a deliberate, long-term blueprint for authoritarian governance that aims to dismantle federal institutions protecting civil liberties.

Project 2025, championed by the Heritage Foundation and embraced by Trump loyalists, envisions purging career civil servants, politicizing agencies, and curtailing democratic checks and balances. Dr. King’s warning underscores that these are not isolated incidents but part of a coordinated, ongoing assault on the foundations of American democracy.

Her call to action is clear: while the nation reflects on its 250 years, it must also reckon with the persistent forces of racism, voter suppression, and authoritarianism. Celebrating without confronting these realities risks repeating history’s darkest chapters.
