Rubio Claims 10 Sailors Dead in Strait of Hormuz Amid US-Iran Tensions

At least 10 civilian sailors have died and roughly 23,000 remain stranded and vulnerable in the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking from the White House, Rubio painted a dire picture of the situation in the strategic waterway, describing stranded sailors as "sitting ducks" who are "isolated," "starving," and "left for dead."

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been effectively closed by Iran, escalating tensions with the United States and its allies. Rubio framed the crisis as a direct result of Iranian actions and issued a stark ultimatum: Iran must "come to the negotiating table" and accept US terms or face "growing isolation, economic collapse, and ultimately total defeat." Rubio warned Tehran not to "test the will of the United States."

Despite these threats, Rubio also declared that the major US military campaign against Iran, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," launched on February 28, has concluded successfully. However, he stopped short of declaring the conflict itself over, leaving open the possibility of renewed hostilities.

The US is currently executing "Project Freedom," an operation aimed at guiding stranded commercial vessels safely through the Gulf. Rubio emphasized the urgency of this mission given the precarious position of thousands of sailors caught in the standoff.

Meanwhile, Iran’s leadership rejects US demands as "impossible." Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized the US for pursuing maximum pressure while expecting Iran to capitulate at the negotiating table, calling the approach untenable.

The conflict has also spilled into regional tensions, with the UAE reporting missile and drone attacks allegedly launched by Iran, including strikes on petroleum facilities causing injuries. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre confirmed a cargo vessel was hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait, though environmental impacts remain unclear.

International actors are urging restraint. Pakistan’s military leadership has engaged with both US and Iranian officials to de-escalate the crisis, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility and respect for sovereignty.

Rubio’s warnings also extended to Iran’s allies, particularly China, which he says suffers economically from the blockade. He expressed hope that China would pressure Iran to reopen the strait.

As this dangerous standoff continues, the humanitarian toll mounts and the risk of wider conflict looms.
