Rudy Giuliani Hospitalized in Critical Condition Amid Fallout from Election Lies
Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and key architect of Trump’s baseless 2020 election fraud claims, has been hospitalized in critical condition. His health crisis comes after years of legal and financial consequences stemming from his role in pushing falsehoods that helped undermine American democracy.
Rudy Giuliani, once heralded as “America’s Mayor,” is now fighting for his life in a hospital, according to his spokesman Ted Goodman. The 81-year-old former New York City mayor remains in critical but stable condition, though details about his illness have not been disclosed.
Giuliani’s current health emergency arrives against a backdrop of relentless fallout from his central role in former President Donald Trump’s failed attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. Giuliani was a leading figure in promoting the false narrative that the election was “rigged,” spearheading efforts that included the infamous “fake electors” scheme—a coordinated attempt to submit fraudulent electoral votes in battleground states Trump lost.
President Trump himself took to Truth Social to praise Giuliani as the “Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR,” while lamenting the “cheating” and “fabricated stories” that he claims destroyed the nation’s integrity. Trump’s support also extended to a controversial blanket pardon in November, which absolved Giuliani and 76 others implicated in the post-election legal battles and conspiracy efforts.
But Giuliani’s election lies have come at a steep personal cost. He was disbarred in both New York and Washington, D.C., stripped of his law license for professional misconduct related to his false claims. In a landmark 2023 civil case, a federal jury ordered him to pay $148 million to Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, who were defamed by his baseless accusations of fraud tied to Dominion Voting Systems machines.
Giuliani also settled a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit with Dominion in September, quietly resolving the case that exposed the financial risks of his election misinformation campaign.
The former mayor’s hospitalization is a stark reminder of the personal and political toll exacted by the corrosive lies that continue to threaten democratic norms. As Giuliani fights for his health, the damage he helped inflict on American democracy remains a battle far from over.
