Rudy Giuliani’s Fall from “America’s Mayor” to Disbarred Election Fraud Fighter
Once hailed as “America’s mayor” for his 9/11 leadership, Rudy Giuliani’s post-Trump career has been a cascade of legal defeats and disgrace. From defamation suits over baseless voter fraud claims to criminal indictments and disbarment, Giuliani’s relentless attempts to overturn the 2020 election have left him a cautionary tale of corruption and consequence.
Rudy Giuliani’s transformation from the revered New York City mayor who led through 9/11 to a disbarred lawyer engulfed in legal chaos is a textbook example of how power and loyalty to Donald Trump can erode legacy and credibility.
Giuliani’s early career was marked by notable public service, including his tenure as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and his widely praised leadership during the September 11, 2001 attacks. This earned him the nickname “America’s mayor.” But his post-mayoral years have been dominated by his role as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and his fierce defense of Trump’s baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
After Joe Biden’s victory in 2020, Giuliani became a leading figure in spreading false allegations of widespread voter fraud. His aggressive legal actions and public accusations targeted voting machine companies and election workers, resulting in multiple costly defamation lawsuits.
In 2021, Dominion Voting Systems sued Giuliani for defamation after he claimed their machines rigged the election in Biden’s favor. The case dragged on until a settlement was reached in 2025. Similarly, two Georgia election workers who Giuliani accused of fraud won a $148 million judgment in 2023. Giuliani claimed he could not pay, but the case too settled two years later.
Giuliani’s legal troubles extended beyond civil suits. In 2023, he was indicted in Georgia for his efforts to interfere with the state’s 2020 election results. However, the charges were dropped in 2025 after a newly elected prosecutor decided not to pursue the case.
The final blow came in 2024 when Giuliani was disbarred in both New York state and the District of Columbia, stripping him of his ability to practice law. This disbarment was a direct consequence of his unethical behavior in promoting election lies and undermining democratic processes.
Giuliani’s downfall underscores the dangers of weaponizing the legal system and spreading disinformation to cling to power. His story is a stark reminder that no amount of past glory shields public figures from accountability when they choose to attack democracy itself.
