Russian Disinformation Weaponizes Epstein Files and Global Crises to Attack Ukraine and the West
New monitoring reveals Russia’s disinformation campaigns exploiting the declassified Epstein files, Middle East conflicts, and even Greenland to smear Ukraine and Western allies. False claims linking Zelensky to child trafficking and biolabs, plus conspiracy theories about Iran and Hollywood, flood social media with millions of views, aiming to erode trust and boost Putin’s image.
Russian disinformation efforts in early 2026 have taken a sharp turn toward exploiting major international events to push anti-Ukrainian and pro-Kremlin narratives, according to a recent report from the ATAFIMI project. This coordinated campaign weaponizes everything from the declassified Epstein files to the Middle East conflict and even U.S. interest in Greenland to sow confusion and undermine Western unity.
The Epstein files, recently unsealed, have become a potent tool in Moscow’s propaganda arsenal. Russian-backed content falsely claims that Vladimir Putin “rescued” Ukrainian children and promotes baseless allegations linking Bill Gates to secret power networks. More insidiously, the files are twisted to recycle discredited narratives about Ukraine, including bogus accusations that President Volodymyr Zelensky is involved in child trafficking rings and that the 2014 Maidan uprising was a Western-backed coup orchestrated by shadowy elites like the Rothschilds.
These falsehoods are amplified through viral TikTok videos with millions of views and AI-generated images showing fabricated connections between Zelensky and Jeffrey Epstein. The reach spans multiple countries including Spain, Serbia, Georgia, and Lithuania, highlighting the broad geographic scope of this disinformation offensive.
Meanwhile, Russia exploits the ongoing Middle East tensions following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran to fuel anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiment, portraying Moscow as a strategic ally against Western aggression. Conspiracy theories about Russia seizing shipments of “adrenochrome” destined for Hollywood serve to demonize Western actors and glorify Putin’s regime.
The Kremlin’s disinformation also targets Western alliances through narratives about Greenland, mocking U.S. and European partners and questioning their support for Ukraine. A fabricated quote attributed to Zelensky urging Denmark to sell Greenland to fund Ukraine exemplifies this strategy to sow discord among NATO members.
Even the 2026 Winter Olympics became a battlefield for disinformation. False claims about Ukrainian athletes being marginalized or linked to terrorism circulated widely, designed to depict Kyiv as isolated and delegitimize the Ukrainian government’s war effort.
This multi-front disinformation campaign underscores Russia’s relentless pursuit of destabilizing Ukraine and eroding confidence in Western democracies. By hijacking real events and weaving them into a web of lies, Moscow aims to rewrite the narrative to its advantage, making vigilance and fact-checking more critical than ever.
At Only Clowns Are Orange, we will continue to track these manipulations and hold power accountable by surfacing the truth behind the Kremlin’s disinformation playbook. Stay informed and skeptical—because in the battle for democracy, misinformation is a weapon as dangerous as any missile.
