MADISON (WKOW) -- Friday's 6-3 Supreme Court ruling that limits President Trump's ability to impose tariffs without congressional approval generated mixed reactions from Wisconsin's senators.

At a press conference in Madison Friday, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) applauded what she said is a check on Trump's authority to impose tariffs without proper approval.

"We all knew his trade war was reckless and jacks up costs," Baldwin said. "Now we also know that it is illegal."

Baldwin said the ruling benefits Wisconsin families. She said she's received more than 40,000 phone calls since last month, and many have been complaints about rising prices.

"I heard from so many made in Wisconsin businesses who said the chaos and uncertainty of Donald Trump's trade war has made it impossible to plan for the future," said Baldwin.

Meanwhile, in a post on X, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) wrote, "Both sides made reasonable arguments leading to a split decision. In the end, the SCOTUS decided nothing and created a HUGE mess."

However, Baldwin disagreed, as she said the decision sends a clear message.

"I just think this Supreme Court decision, which is a six to three decision, should be as clear of a signal as this President can receive," she said.

27 News reached out to Sen. Johnson and Rep. Bryan Steihl (R, WI-01) for a formal interview and comment requests, but neither responded.
