Seattle-Area Volunteers Mobilize to Sound the Alarm on ICE Raids with Free Whistle Kits
In response to ongoing ICE raids, a grassroots collective in Seattle is distributing over 150,000 free whistle kits designed to alert communities of imminent immigration enforcement actions. Inspired by similar efforts in Los Angeles and Chicago, WA Whistles empowers residents with simple, effective tools to protect their neighbors and assert their rights.
In the shadow of relentless ICE enforcement, a volunteer-led effort in the Seattle area is arming communities with a low-tech but powerful warning system: whistles. WA Whistles, a grassroots network, has distributed more than 150,000 whistle kits free of charge to help people alert one another about nearby ICE activity.
This movement traces its roots to Los Angeles, where activists first used whistles to signal impending raids. The tactic quickly spread nationwide, with Chicago’s Teresa Magaña creating a zine to explain the whistles’ purpose and usage. From there, the idea blossomed into organized groups assembling whistle kits and sharing them widely on social media.
Seattle native Kate brought the initiative to the Pacific Northwest, emphasizing that WA Whistles is not a formal organization but a “gathering place” for volunteers committed to community defense. Each whistle kit includes a loud whistle—mostly 3D printed but also donated commercial models—along with instructions on how to use the whistle during ICE alerts and a summary of legal rights for those at risk.
Why whistles? According to WA Whistles’ FAQ, whistles offer a “cheap, simple tool for fast alerts,” instantly notifying everyone within earshot that danger is imminent. Their effectiveness is proven, with successful deployments in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Seattle residents can pick up free whistle kits at “Whistle Stops” like Mayta’s Market International and Khalij Halal Market, both located less than half a mile from Highline College. Bulk 3D-printed whistles can be dropped off at “Whistle Drop Boxes,” and assembled kits can be made or collected at any of five “Whistle Hubs” spread across the Seattle area, including North Seattle, downtown, Beacon Hill, Redmond, and Issaquah.
WA Whistles welcomes donations of money, supplies, and volunteer time to sustain and grow their efforts. Interested individuals can find more information and ways to get involved through their online Linktree.
As ICE continues aggressive enforcement, WA Whistles exemplifies community resilience—arming everyday people with the means to protect their neighbors and stand up to authoritarian overreach. This is direct action, plain and simple, cutting through the silence with a piercing call to vigilance.
