Sen. Jeff Merkley Calls Out Trump Administration’s Reckless Overreach at Baker City Town Hall

Senator Jeff Merkley took no prisoners during his May 2 town hall in Baker City, laying bare the Trump administration’s brazen overreach and disregard for democratic norms. Speaking to a packed Senior Center, Merkley spotlighted the administration’s reckless Forest Service reorganization, immigration enforcement abuses, and unchecked executive actions that threaten constitutional order.

Merkley slammed the administration’s budget proposal for the Forest Service, which “zeroes out” funding for critical research programs. He called this move “crazy,” emphasizing that research is essential to managing America’s forests and fighting wildfires. The plan to shift firefighting duties to the Department of Interior and relocate Forest Service headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Salt Lake City also drew Merkley’s wary critique. While some elements might “make sense,” the overall approach bypassed Congress and lacked transparency.

On immigration, Merkley was blunt. Responding to a question from a local high school senior, he condemned the administration’s “secret police tactics” as “terrifying.” He highlighted the need for comprehensive immigration reform, pointing to the 2013 Senate bill that combined border security with a pathway to citizenship—legislation the House refused to consider. Merkley also pushed back against the administration’s hateful rhetoric, noting that immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than native-born citizens.

Merkley didn’t stop there. He warned that the Trump administration has repeatedly exceeded its constitutional authority, citing unilateral tariff impositions and military actions in Iran as prime examples. “Wars should never be decided by one person,” Merkley said, lamenting the lack of congressional oversight and slow judicial responses. He stressed the importance of defending election integrity and restoring “some sense of order” amid an administration that flouts rules and norms.

The senator also addressed local concerns, including the controversial push by some in Eastern Oregon to join Idaho. Merkley noted overwhelming opposition in the room and reaffirmed his commitment to Oregon, where he has visited every county for 18 years.
