Sen. Mark Kelly Calls Out Trump’s “Flailing” Exit Strategy in Iran War

Kelly painted a bleak picture of the administration’s approach. He accused Trump and his Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth of simply trying to “drop as many bombs and shoot as many high-end missiles as we possibly can at as many targets.” According to Kelly, Trump is now “flailing” and desperately trying to figure out how to “save face” as the war drains American military resources and public support. The senator did not mince words about Hegseth, whom he called unqualified for the job of Secretary of Defense.

The conflict has entered a tense new phase after recent exchanges of fire in the Strait of Hormuz, with no clear end in sight and Congress yet to authorize prolonged military action. Kelly pointed out the irony that Trump, who famously claimed in 2016 to be smarter than military generals, has instead surrounded himself with “yes men” unwilling or unable to offer sound advice.

Kelly also used the event to highlight his ongoing legal fight against Pentagon efforts to punish him for a November video urging military personnel to refuse illegal orders. The video, which Trump and Hegseth branded “seditious,” sparked a move to censure and demote Kelly. The senator won a preliminary injunction blocking these retaliatory measures and vowed to keep fighting to protect the First Amendment rights of millions of retired service members.

Introduced by Cindy McCain at a facility named after her late husband, Sen. John McCain, Kelly’s remarks underscored his commitment to holding the Trump administration accountable for reckless military adventurism and attacks on dissent. “I’m not going away,” Kelly said. “We’ve got to stick up for our rights. The First Amendment — the right of free speech — is the one that guarantees the other rights.”
