Senate Democrats Slam Trump’s Illegal Voter Suppression Executive Order, Demand DHS and SSA Halt It

A coalition of Senate Democrats led by Padilla, Peters, Durbin, and Schumer is calling out the Trump administration’s executive order forcing DHS and SSA to create flawed “eligible voter” lists. They warn this illegal power grab risks wrongfully disenfranchising tens of thousands of eligible voters by relying on inaccurate citizenship data.

Senate Democratic leaders Alex Padilla, Gary Peters, Dick Durbin, and Chuck Schumer are sounding the alarm on President Trump’s latest assault on voting rights. In a coordinated demand, they have called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA) to reject the March 31 executive order that attempts to sidestep federal law and constitutionally protected voting rights.

The executive order directs DHS to compile lists of “eligible voters” using data from the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program, which relies heavily on SSA citizenship records. But as the senators point out, the SAVE program is riddled with inaccuracies and outdated information. DHS itself has admitted that the citizenship verification results it produces may be wrong. The predictable outcome? Tens of thousands of legitimate U.S. citizens could find themselves barred from voting on Election Day due to erroneous flags labeling them as non-citizens.

The senators’ letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin warns bluntly that expanding the SAVE program’s role in voter roll maintenance will only deepen wrongful disenfranchisement. They demand an immediate halt to the use of SAVE data for these “illegal and non-statutory purposes.”

Their letter to SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano echoes these concerns, highlighting SSA’s role in feeding faulty data into SAVE and the recent Department of the Treasury Office of Inspector General (DOGE) findings that put public data at risk. The senators emphasize that SSA’s participation in this scheme violates the Constitution’s Elections Clause by interfering in state-run elections.

This coordinated push follows a previous effort by the same group of Democrats to block another Trump executive order that sought to weaponize the U.S. Postal Service against vote-by-mail efforts. Both moves represent a pattern of authoritarian overreach designed to suppress votes under the guise of “election integrity.”

By demanding DHS and SSA uphold federal law over Trump’s illegal directives, these senators are standing up for the fundamental right to vote and pushing back against the administration’s ongoing campaign to undermine democracy. The stakes could not be higher as the nation faces threats of disenfranchisement at multiple levels.

Read the full letters to DHS Secretary Mullin and SSA Commissioner Bisignano to see the detailed legal and factual case against this voter suppression scheme. The fight to protect voting rights is on, and the Trump administration’s attempts to rig the system must be exposed and stopped.
