Senator Fetterman Slams DHS ICE Detention Expansion in Pennsylvania, Citing Infrastructure and Taxpayer Harm

Senator John Fetterman has doubled down on his opposition to plans for massive ICE detention centers in Pennsylvania, warning these facilities will devastate local infrastructure and drain over $1.6 million annually from county tax revenues. His letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlights the reckless federal overreach that ignores community input and threatens years of economic progress.

Senator Fetterman Slams DHS ICE Detention Expansion in Pennsylvania, Citing Infrastructure and Taxpayer Harm

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) fired off a sharp rebuke to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, reiterating his firm opposition to the Trump-era plan to convert facilities in Tremont Township and Upper Bern Township into sprawling ICE detention centers.

The proposed detention hubs would house 7,500 and 1,500 detainees respectively — an expansion that local officials say would overwhelm existing infrastructure and local services. Tremont Township leaders warn the 7,500-bed facility alone would quadruple the current burden on water, sewage, and electrical systems. Meanwhile, local law enforcement and emergency medical services face a surge in demand they are ill-equipped to handle.

Beyond the logistical nightmare, Fetterman highlights the financial hit to local communities. The federal acquisition would slash over $1.6 million annually in tax revenue for Schuylkill and Berks counties, deepening budget shortfalls for local governments and school districts already stretched thin. This loss threatens to stall or reverse decades of economic development efforts in these areas.

“While I have been clear in my support for the enforcement of federal immigration law, this decision will do significant damage to these local tax bases, set back decades-long efforts to boost economic development, and place undue burdens on limited existing infrastructure in these communities,” Fetterman wrote.

The senator’s letter underscores a broader pattern of the Trump administration’s ICE expansion plans: imposing massive detention centers without meaningful consultation with state or local officials, ignoring the human and economic costs to communities.

Fetterman’s call to Mullin demands a halt to these proposals that prioritize federal detention capacity over the wellbeing and sustainability of Pennsylvania’s towns and counties.
