SNL Roasts FBI Director Kash Patel’s Custom Bourbon Bottles in Sharp Satire

Saturday Night Live’s May 9 cold open delivered a biting send-up of FBI Director Kash Patel, highlighting reports that he hands out customized bourbon bottles engraved with his name and official title. The sketch, featuring Aziz Ansari as Patel alongside Matt Damon’s Brett Kavanaugh and Colin Jost’s Pete Hegseth, mocked the FBI chief’s apparent vanity and penchant for self-promotion.

According to a report from The Atlantic, Patel’s Woodford Reserve bottles are etched with “Kash Patel FBI Director” and an FBI shield, flanked by an eagle and the number 9—presumably marking Patel as the ninth FBI director in history. Some bottles also bear Patel’s signature with a “#9” hashtag. The FBI insists Patel pays for these gifts personally and follows all ethical guidelines, but the optics of an FBI director branding bourbon with his own name raise uncomfortable questions about decorum and professionalism in federal law enforcement leadership.

Woodford Reserve, a Kentucky-based bourbon with roots dating back to 1812, is a storied brand and the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby. That Patel chose this iconic spirit for his personalized bottles only adds to the spectacle.

In the SNL cold open, Ansari’s Patel boasts, “I made my own FBI bourbon with my name on it. Somehow, this is a real thing that I, the FBI director, have made.” He jokes about bringing his own alcohol to bars because he looks too young for official photos, underscoring the surreal nature of the situation. Weekend Update’s Michael Che piled on, quipping, “Kash Patel whiskey. So strong, you won’t be able to see straight.”

This skit comes amid a broader pattern of controversies surrounding Patel, including allegations of politicizing law enforcement and weaponizing federal agencies against political opponents. Patel has also filed a lawsuit against The Atlantic over previous claims of excessive drinking.

SNL’s sharp satire cuts through the self-serious veneer Patel tries to project, exposing the troubling mix of ego, entitlement, and questionable ethics at the top of the FBI under the Trump administration’s lingering influence. For a federal agency meant to embody integrity and impartiality, the spectacle of a director marketing personalized bourbon bottles is a stark reminder of how far the institution has been compromised.

We’ll keep tracking these stories that reveal the corruption and authoritarian overreach poisoning our democratic institutions. Stay tuned.
