Socialist NYC Mayor Mamdani Slams ICE as Protests Erupt Over Migrant Arrest
New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned ICE’s arrest of an undocumented migrant accused of assault and drug charges, calling the agency’s raids “cruel and inhumane.” The operation sparked protests in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, resulting in nine arrests amid accusations of excessive force and community terrorizing.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not hold back in his criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a tense and chaotic arrest operation in Brooklyn sparked protests and multiple arrests. The target was Chidozie Wilson Okeke, an undocumented immigrant from Nigeria with prior assault and drug possession charges, who was taken into custody by ICE agents at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center following a medical evaluation.
Mamdani, a prominent socialist and vocal immigrant rights advocate, told Gothamist that ICE raids are “cruel and inhumane” and do nothing to promote public safety. Though he had not seen videos of the protest, he reiterated his long-standing opposition to ICE, calling the agency a terrorizing force that disregards legal facts and community welfare.
The arrest triggered a swift response from local activists and politicians. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso called ICE’s presence “deeply alarming” and encouraged residents to report federal agents to the Hands Off NYC hotline. State Senator Julia Salazar criticized the heavy NYPD deployment at what she described as a justified community gathering. New York City Councilmember Sandy Nurse, who was present during the protest, described the arrest as a “kidnapping” and praised the crowd’s determination to demand ICE’s removal from the neighborhood.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Okeke resisted arrest, attempted to strike agents with his vehicle, and was physically combative. ICE agents used what DHS described as the minimum necessary force. Protesters outside the hospital reportedly damaged ICE vehicles and assaulted agents, leading to minor injuries.
Of the nine people detained during the protest, eight faced charges including resisting arrest and criminal mischief, while one was issued a summons. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between ICE enforcement operations and immigrant communities in New York City, where elected officials increasingly challenge the agency’s tactics.
Mamdani has publicly called for abolishing ICE, arguing that the agency fails its stated mission and instead terrorizes people regardless of immigration status or legal circumstances. This latest confrontation underscores the growing resistance to ICE’s presence in immigrant neighborhoods and the political pushback from progressive city leaders.
As ICE continues aggressive enforcement actions, New York’s local officials and residents are mobilizing to hold the agency accountable and push for alternatives that prioritize community safety over fear and disruption.
