Suspect in White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting Charged with Attempted Presidential Assassination

Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, was arraigned today on serious federal charges including attempted assassination of the President of the United States. The charges stem from the April 25, 2026, shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner held at the Washington Hilton hotel.

According to the Department of Justice, Allen arrived in Washington, D.C. on April 24 after traveling cross-country by train. He checked into the Washington Hilton where the prestigious dinner was taking place. On the evening of April 25, Allen approached a security checkpoint on the hotel’s Terrace Level carrying a 12-gauge pump action shotgun and a .38 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He ran through the magnetometer and fired a shot, wounding a Secret Service officer in the chest.

The officer, protected by a ballistic vest, responded immediately by firing multiple rounds at Allen, who was subdued with minor injuries and arrested on the spot. Law enforcement recovered the weapons Allen brought from California, confirming his intent through firearm purchase records and a chilling email he sent to family and a former employer just before the attack. In that email, Allen ominously acknowledged his plan and signed off with disturbing nicknames including “Friendly Federal Assassin.”

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche praised the swift response of law enforcement for preventing a massacre, emphasizing that “deranged attacks on our elected officials will never go unpunished.” FBI Director Kash Patel echoed this, highlighting the investigation’s rapid progress and the clear evidence that Allen’s trip was a premeditated assassination attempt targeting President Trump and his administration.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro condemned the violent plot, underscoring that political violence has no place in the nation’s capital. FBI Assistant Director Darren Cox also condemned the attack, stressing that violence is never an acceptable form of political expression.

This incident shines a harsh light on the persistent dangers facing public officials amid rising political tensions. The FBI Washington Field Office and U.S. Secret Service continue their investigation while prosecutors prepare to hold Allen fully accountable.

The charges against Allen mark only the beginning of legal proceedings, but the rapid and professional law enforcement response prevented what could have been a devastating blow to American democracy. This attempted assassination is a stark reminder that threats to our political system remain real and urgent. We will keep tracking developments as this case unfolds.
