Tennessee Republicans Erase Only Majority-Black Democratic District, Sparking Fierce Protests

Tennessee GOP has dismantled the state’s sole majority-Black and Democratic congressional district in a blatant act of racial gerrymandering. The move, passed amid protests and arrests, aims to dilute Black political power just days after the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act.

Tennessee Republicans have just delivered a brutal blow to Black voters and democracy itself by erasing the state’s only majority-Black and Democratic congressional district in Memphis. The new map, rammed through a special legislative session with near-total GOP support, splits the city’s Black voters into three separate districts — a textbook case of racial gerrymandering designed to dilute their political influence.

The Tennessee House of Representatives approved the map 64–25–3, with every Democrat voting no alongside three Republicans who represent parts of Memphis. Protesters packed the chamber, shouting and blowing horns in outrage. Democratic Representative Justin Jones took the protest to another level by burning a Confederate flag after the vote, while the brother of fellow Democrat Justin Pearson was arrested during the chaos.

The Senate followed suit, passing the map 25–5. Only one Democrat, Senator Charlane Oliver, stood in defiant protest, unveiling a banner denouncing the map as “Jim Crow 2.0.” The new lines now head to Governor Bill Lee’s desk, where he is expected to sign the racist map into law.

This cynical power grab comes on the heels of the Supreme Court’s recent gutting of the Voting Rights Act, which has emboldened states like Tennessee to openly engage in racial gerrymandering without fear of federal intervention. The GOP’s 99 percent white caucus in Tennessee has weaponized this moment to silence Black voters and entrench their political dominance.

This is not just a local story. It’s a warning sign of how quickly democracy can be undermined when courts and lawmakers collude to erase the voices of marginalized communities. We will keep tracking these attacks and holding power accountable. Because when democracy is on the line, silence is complicity.
