Tonko Slams GOP Farm Bill for Ignoring Cost-of-Living Crisis and Locking in Historic Food Aid Cuts

Congressman Paul Tonko (NY-20) delivered a scathing rebuke of the recently passed Farm Bill, condemning Republicans for pushing through legislation that abandons struggling American families and farmers during a deepening economic crisis.

In a statement following the House vote, Tonko called out the bill for ignoring the crushing cost-of-living pressures millions face while enshrining massive cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and critical conservation and energy initiatives. He warned that the bill "locks in the $187 billion cuts to food assistance made in Republicans’ One Big Ugly Bill last year — the largest cut to food assistance in history," a move that threatens to leave children, veterans, and seniors hungry.

Tonko also underscored how the bill turns a blind eye to the ongoing economic fallout from former President Trump’s reckless tariff policies. "Farmers have felt continued economic hardship from Trump’s reckless tariff scheme," he said, noting the additional strain from skyrocketing fuel and fertilizer costs exacerbated by Trump's escalating conflict with Iran. These pressures are fueling a farm bankruptcy crisis that the bill fails to address.

By greenlighting Trump's illegal tariffs and slashing vital support programs, the Farm Bill prioritizes corporate and political interests over the basic needs of working families and farmers. Tonko’s "no" vote signals a clear rejection of this betrayal.

This legislation is yet another example of how Trump-era policies continue to deepen economic inequality and undermine the well-being of everyday Americans. As costs rise and food insecurity worsens, the Farm Bill’s failures demand urgent attention and accountability.
