Tony Thurmond Takes on California’s Gubernatorial Race with Bold Progressive Agenda
Tony Thurmond, California’s state superintendent and Democratic gubernatorial hopeful, is staking out a fiercely progressive platform that includes abolishing ICE, pushing for single-payer healthcare, and building 2 million housing units by 2030. Rooted in his immigrant background and public service career, Thurmond challenges the status quo with policies aimed at tackling systemic inequality and corporate profiteering.
Tony Thurmond is making a clear bid for the progressive wing of California’s governor’s race, unveiling a platform that confronts the state’s most urgent crises head-on. Speaking with community media, Thurmond laid out ambitious plans to overhaul healthcare, housing, immigration enforcement, and economic fairness.
On healthcare, Thurmond draws from personal tragedy: his brother died at 35 after losing insurance coverage during a rare liver illness. That loss fuels Thurmond’s push for single-payer healthcare, which he frames as a moral imperative to prevent anyone else from dying due to lack of coverage. He condemns the recent Republican budget reconciliation bill as a blow to Medi-Cal and ACA premiums, vowing to work toward reversing its damage and building a system that prioritizes patients over profits.
Housing affordability is a centerpiece of Thurmond’s agenda. He proposes unlocking surplus school district land statewide to develop 2 million housing units by 2030, with state funding to jumpstart pre-development. This plan aims to provide affordable homes for teachers, nurses, public safety workers, and other city and county employees. He also supports a $10 billion affordable housing bond, expanded rent control with reasonable landlord protections, and down payment assistance for first-time buyers. Notably, Thurmond suggests allowing students from border municipalities in Mexico to enroll in California schools, addressing declining enrollment and workforce gaps.
To fund these sweeping initiatives, Thurmond advocates taxing ultra-wealthy Californians with assets over $150 million and endorses the California Billionaire Tax Act — a one-time 5% tax on billionaires. His goal is immediate relief through tax credits for working- and middle-class families, alongside long-term cost reductions by increasing housing supply.
Thurmond’s immigration stance is uncompromising. He is the first gubernatorial candidate to call for abolishing ICE, condemning the agency as a tool of profiteering rather than public safety. He highlights the role of private prison corporations like GEO Group and CoreCivic, which benefit financially from harsh immigration policies and have donated millions to Trump’s campaign. Thurmond accuses the Trump administration of weaponizing immigration enforcement to enrich corporate allies at the expense of immigrant communities. He has already passed legislation barring ICE from operating in California schools and healthcare facilities.
Rounding out his platform, Thurmond calls for universal childcare to support working parents and women-led small businesses, citing studies that show such programs boost the economy by enabling more mothers to join the workforce.
Thurmond’s progressive vision is deeply rooted in his own story — born to a Panamanian immigrant mother, separated from siblings in childhood, and raised on food stamps. His 18 years in public office span city council to state superintendent, shaping a candidate who understands poverty and public service firsthand.
In a race where moderate Democrats often dominate, Thurmond stakes out a bold alternative: a fight against entrenched inequality, corporate greed, and the authoritarian overreach embodied by ICE and Trump’s immigration apparatus. His platform demands accountability and systemic change — a rare voice for the progressive left in California’s gubernatorial contest.
