The Trump administration has officially declared the “offensive phase” of its war against Iran concluded, but the reality on the ground tells a far grimmer story. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced “Operation Epic Fury is concluded” after more than two months of US and Israeli bombardment targeting Iran. Yet, mere hours later, a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz—the critical chokepoint for a fifth of the world’s oil exports—was struck by an unknown projectile, underscoring that this conflict is far from over.

President Donald Trump’s decision to pause “Project Freedom,” a US-led effort to escort stranded ships through the Strait, is being framed as a move toward diplomacy. But the pause comes amid a continued US blockade that still restricts maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, trapping over 1,550 commercial vessels and 22,000 sailors in the Persian Gulf. The administration claims this pressure campaign aims to force Iran to the negotiating table, yet Iranian leaders categorically reject these demands as “impossible,” calling out the hypocrisy of expecting unilateral submission while maintaining a policy of maximum pressure.

Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian told Iraq’s prime minister-designate that the US’s approach is fundamentally flawed, highlighting the disconnect between Washington’s rhetoric and the realities of the conflict. Meanwhile, global oil markets remain volatile, reflecting the ongoing instability the US’s aggressive policies have fueled.

Rubio’s framing of Iran as the sole aggressor conveniently ignores the US’s role in escalating tensions through sanctions, military strikes, and a crippling blockade.
