Trump Administration Sues New Jersey to Keep ICE Agents Masked and Anonymous
The Trump Justice Department is challenging New Jersey’s new law that bans law enforcement officers, including ICE agents, from hiding their identities with masks during public interactions. The state passed the law to prevent dangerous anonymous policing following deadly immigration raids, but the feds claim it violates federal supremacy and unfairly targets their operations.
The Trump administration has launched a federal lawsuit against New Jersey over a state law designed to force law enforcement officers, including ICE agents, to reveal their identities and prohibit the use of masks during arrests or detentions. The Department of Justice argues that the law, signed by Gov. Mikie Sherrill in March, unlawfully interferes with federal law enforcement functions and violates the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
New Jersey’s law was a direct response to public outrage after violent immigration enforcement operations, including the killings of U.S. citizens Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, where masked federal agents concealed their identities. The law restricts masked or anonymous policing except in narrow cases such as undercover work, threats of retaliation, or protection against chemical agents and disease transmission.
Attorney General Jen Davenport of New Jersey emphasized the safety risks posed by anonymous officers, noting that the federal government has failed to justify when or why their officials need to hide their faces. “To this day, the Federal Government still cannot explain when its officials need to mask or forgo identification in violation of this law, or why they actually need to do so,” Davenport said.
The DOJ claims New Jersey’s law discriminates against federal officials and improperly regulates core federal functions. Despite written requests from federal attorneys to halt enforcement, New Jersey has stood firm on the law’s constitutionality and ordered compliance from all officers.
This legal battle highlights the ongoing conflict over immigration enforcement tactics and the limits of state power to hold federal agents accountable. The Trump administration’s lawsuit seeks to maintain the status quo of masked, anonymous immigration raids, while New Jersey pushes back to protect public safety and transparency in law enforcement.
For readers tracking abuses in immigration enforcement and federal overreach, this lawsuit is a clear example of the Trump administration’s attempts to evade accountability and operate in the shadows. We will continue monitoring the case as it moves through the courts.
