Trump and Putin Plot Iran Escalation and Ukraine Ceasefire That Could Be a Moscow Trap

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a lengthy phone call on Wednesday, discussing the ongoing war in Iran and the possibility of a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine. According to Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, Putin warned that a US ground operation in Iran would be dangerous, while welcoming Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire in the region. Yet Russia, an ally of Iran, remains deeply involved—providing intelligence and drones to target US forces, despite being sidelined in official diplomacy.

Trump later boasted about the call, saying, “We had a very good conversation, I’ve known him a long time.” He also claimed Putin offered to take Iran’s buried uranium to Russia but insisted he wanted Putin focused on “ending the war in Ukraine.” Trump repeated his belief that a deal to end the Ukraine conflict is close, though the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Putin’s demands remain unchanged: Ukraine must cede territory Russia controls in the Donbas and accept Moscow’s terms. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected such concessions, making the conflict’s core issues a stalemate. Meanwhile, Putin told Trump Russian forces are pushing back Ukrainian troops, but independent military analysts report no decisive breakthroughs. Both sides suffer heavy casualties and continue targeting each other’s energy infrastructure.

This call fits a disturbing pattern of Trump parroting Putin’s propaganda, blaming Ukraine for the ongoing fighting and downplaying Russia’s aggression. Trump even confused Ukraine with Iran, claiming Ukraine had lost all its ships and planes—a falsehood that echoes his history of twisting facts to suit his narrative.

The proposed temporary ceasefire coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, though Ukraine remains skeptical. Past ceasefires have allowed Russia to regroup and launch new attacks. The Kremlin has already scaled back its Victory Day parade, removing military hardware for the first time in nearly 20 years due to ongoing drone strikes on Russian territory.

In sum, this phone call is less about peace and more about Trump and Putin coordinating narratives and power plays that keep the war alive. While they talk ceasefires, the brutal reality for Ukrainians and the risk of further Iranian escalation remain unchanged. We will keep watching as this dangerous dance unfolds.
