Trump Blasts His Own Supreme Court Picks as “Disgrace” After Tariff Ruling
In a seething Truth Social tirade, Donald Trump publicly shames Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, both his appointees, for ruling against his tariff powers. Trump’s bitter outburst exposes his expectation of loyalty over law from the Supreme Court and signals deeper frustration ahead of a critical birthright citizenship case.
Donald Trump unleashed a furious tirade on his conservative Supreme Court appointees Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, exposing his raw anger and expectations of loyalty from the nation’s highest court.
On Sunday, Trump posted a 545-word rant on Truth Social, initially praising the justices but quickly descending into name-calling. He labeled Gorsuch and Barrett “a disgrace to our nation,” “fools and lapdogs,” and “an embarrassment to their families” after they invalidated his unilateral tariff powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act earlier this year.
“I ‘Love’ Justice Neil Gorsuch! He’s a really smart and good man,” Trump wrote, before pivoting to accuse both justices of hurting the country despite being his appointees. “I do not believe they mean to do so,” he added with thinly veiled sarcasm.
Trump’s rant reveals a disturbing expectation: that Supreme Court justices owe loyalty to the president who appointed them rather than to the Constitution or the law. “They have to do the right thing, but it’s really OK for them to be loyal to the person that appointed them,” he argued.
The rant also foreshadows Trump’s looming legal battles, particularly over his executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship. Signed on the first day of his second term, the order would deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas. Lower courts blocked the order, citing the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, and a Supreme Court ruling is expected soon.
Trump ominously predicted the court will rule against him again, calling birthright citizenship “an unsustainable, unsafe, and incredibly costly DISASTER.” He warned that a negative ruling “is not Economically sustainable for the United States of America!”
The American Civil Liberties Union, representing challengers to the executive order, slammed Trump’s policy as flouting constitutional mandates, longstanding precedent, and fundamental American values.
Trump’s bitter public attack on his own justices marks a dangerous escalation in his authoritarian tendencies. His demand for loyalty over lawful judgment threatens the independence of the judiciary, a cornerstone of democratic governance. This episode is yet another sign that Trump’s presidency remains defined by attempts to bend institutions to his will, regardless of legal or constitutional constraints.
The White House has yet to comment on Trump’s explosive statements. Meanwhile, the nation awaits the Supreme Court’s upcoming decisions that will test the resilience of American democracy against presidential overreach.
