Trump Challenges His MAGA Base With Unauthorized Attack on Iran - La Voce di New York
President Donald Trump ordered a large-scale attack on Iran without Congressional approval, aiming to dismantle Iran's nuclear program and promote regime change, prompting criticism from some Republicans and division among his supporters. The operation resulted in multiple casualties, including reports of civilian deaths, and triggered Iranian retaliations targeting U.S. and Israeli interests in the region. The attack bypassed legal procedures requiring Congressional consent, raising concerns over escalation and potential further conflict.
President Donald Trump has ordered a major attack on Iran without Congressional approval, sparking outrage among his most loyal supporters. Announced on Saturday morning, the operation aims to dismantle the country’s nuclear program and push for a regime change. The Republican leader openly admitted that the action could result in the deaths of U.S. citizens, a risk that has alarmed the party’s anti-interventionist wing.
Even within Trump’s closest base, opinions remain divided. Some, like Representative Anna Paulina Luna, called for prayers for U.S. troops and Iranian civilians. Other alt-right figures, including Milo Yiannopoulos and Cassandra MacDonald, described the decision as “evil and disgusting.” Far-right figure Nick Fuentes wrote on X: “NO WAR WITH IRAN. ISRAEL IS DRAGGING US INTO WAR. AMERICA FIRST.”

Vice President JD Vance attempted to reassure skeptical supporters, asserting that there would be no prolonged conflict without a clear strategy. Still, many Republicans recall that similar military operations in the past led to extended wars, with a high human cost.
Context and Consequences
Under U.S. law, the nighttime attack should have awaited Congressional approval. Republican Thomas Massie had previously tried to pass legislation requiring the President to obtain legislative consent before striking the Islamic Republic. In a video announcing the offensive, Trump justified the raid by claiming that Iran had refused to halt its nuclear program and also urged Iranian citizens to overthrow their government.
The prospect of U.S. troop casualties further deepens divisions within the party. Just the day before, House Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene reminded the public that the GOP leader had previously criticized foreign wars, particularly the 2003 Iraq invasion, emphasizing that the alleged weapons of mass destruction used to justify the conflict did not actually exist.
Dozens of casualties have already been reported since the start of the operation. Initial strikes from the U.S. and Israel hit targets in multiple areas across Iran, with state media reporting dozens dead after an attack on a girls’ school in the southern city of Minab. Iranian counterattacks targeted U.S. and Israeli bases across the region, and have also struck civilian infrastrucutre, like the international airport in Kuwait. Information remains fragmented, but the sequence of attacks and retaliations signals a rapid escalation that is dramatically reshaping the situation on the ground.
