Trump Commerce Secretary Lutnick Faces House Panel Over Epstein Ties and Contradictory Statements
Howard Lutnick, a top Trump administration official, is under fire for his shifting accounts of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. As he prepares to testify before the House Oversight Committee, questions mount about his continued contact with Epstein well after Epstein’s 2008 conviction.
Howard Lutnick, President Donald Trump’s Commerce Secretary and a longtime ally, will appear before the House Oversight Committee to explain his inconsistent statements about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The hearing comes amid growing scrutiny of powerful figures who maintained connections with Epstein despite his known history of sexual abuse and trafficking.
Lutnick’s case is particularly striking because he is the highest-ranking Trump administration official named in the Epstein case files, aside from Trump himself. While Lutnick insists he has done nothing wrong and welcomes the closed-door questioning, his record tells a different story.
In public statements, Lutnick has downplayed any relationship with Epstein. In February, during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing, he claimed he “barely had anything to do with him.” Yet documents and emails released from the Epstein case reveal a much closer association. Lutnick visited Epstein’s New York home for an hour-long meeting in 2011, and his family joined Epstein for lunch on the infamous private island in 2012. They also corresponded via email as late as 2018, discussing neighborhood issues and joint business ventures.
Lutnick’s shifting narrative is stark. In 2022, he told a podcast audience he had decided to “never be in the room” with Epstein after a disturbing 2005 visit to Epstein’s residence. But this contradicts his later admissions of meetings and ongoing contact years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from an underage girl.
Further raising eyebrows, Epstein donated $50,000 to a 2017 dinner honoring Lutnick, and Lutnick invited Epstein to a 2015 fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. They also invested together in a business venture in 2013.
Despite mounting calls from Democrats—and even some Republicans like Rep. Nancy Mace—for Lutnick to resign or at least fully cooperate with investigators, the White House continues to back him. Lutnick has been a staunch supporter of Trump’s policies, including the controversial tariff strategy, and has been a key fundraiser for Trump’s recent campaigns.
This hearing is part of a broader effort by the House Oversight Committee to hold Epstein’s enablers accountable and uncover the extent of their involvement. The panel will also hear from former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was recently pushed out of her position amid related controversies.
Epstein died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, but the fallout from his crimes continues to expose corruption and complicity at the highest levels of power. Lutnick’s testimony could shed new light on how deep those ties run within the Trump administration.
