Trump Demands Loyalty From Supreme Court Justices He Appointed, Attacks Them Over Tariff Rulings
Donald Trump publicly pressured Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett to rule in his favor on birthright citizenship, despite their rulings against his tariff policies. His attacks on the justices threaten judicial independence and come amid growing concerns over threats to federal judges.
Donald Trump is openly demanding loyalty from Supreme Court justices he personally appointed, raising alarm bells about the erosion of judicial independence. On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump lashed out at Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett for striking down his sweeping tariff policies, accusing them of having “hurt our Country so badly.” These tariffs, ruled unlawful in a 6-3 decision, have forced the administration to refund an estimated $166 billion to businesses.
Trump’s attack goes beyond mere frustration with the court’s decision. He questioned why Gorsuch and Barrett “have shown so little respect to our Country, and its people” by ruling against him, and suggested they should “be loyal to the person that appointed them.” This demand for personal loyalty from the judiciary blatantly conflicts with the principle that justices must rule based on law and constitutionality, not political allegiance.
The president also pressured the justices to uphold his controversial executive order aimed at restricting birthright citizenship. This policy would deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. if their parents are not citizens or permanent residents. During oral arguments, justices expressed skepticism about the policy’s legality, and the court’s ruling is expected soon. Trump claimed that a decision against his order would be “economically unsustainable,” attempting to sway the court on economic grounds rather than legal merit.
These attacks come despite warnings from Chief Justice John Roberts, who cautioned in March against “personally directed hostility” toward justices, citing the dangerous rise in threats against federal judges. The U.S. Marshals Service reports hundreds of threats to judges this year alone, underscoring the heightened risks they face amid increasing politicization of the judiciary.
Trump’s public denunciations of the Supreme Court and lower federal judges mark a troubling pattern of undermining judicial authority when rulings don’t align with his agenda. Polling suggests Republican trust in the court has declined as a result. This behavior threatens the very foundation of checks and balances essential to American democracy.
As the Supreme Court prepares to issue its ruling on birthright citizenship, the nation faces a stark choice: uphold the independence of the judiciary or allow political loyalty to dictate the rule of law. Trump’s demand for loyalty from justices is not just a personal grievance—it is an attack on the democratic principles the court is sworn to protect.
