Trump Doubles Down on Cuba Aggression with New Sanctions and Threats of Invasion

President Donald Trump has ratcheted up his administration’s assault on Cuba, signing a new executive order on Friday that dramatically expands sanctions targeting Cuba’s energy, defense, financial services, metals, mining, and security sectors. The order also threatens foreign financial institutions that do business with Cuban entities, potentially cutting them off from the U.S. banking system and further isolating the island from the global economy.

This move comes alongside Trump’s incendiary campaign-style remarks in Florida, where he openly threatened to “take over” Cuba “almost immediately,” even suggesting the deployment of the USS Lincoln aircraft carrier offshore to force a surrender. These comments mark a dangerous escalation in rhetoric and policy that echo decades of failed, punitive U.S. approaches toward Cuba.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel responded swiftly, condemning Trump’s threats as a “dangerous and unprecedented” escalation of military aggression. In a statement, Díaz-Canel declared, “No aggressor, no matter how powerful, will find surrender in Cuba,” pledging that the Cuban people will defend their sovereignty “in every inch of the national territory.” He called on the international community and the American people to reject what he described as a “drastic criminal act” driven by a “small but wealthy and influential group” seeking revenge and domination.

The expanded sanctions are expected to deepen Cuba’s already dire shortages of medicine, food, and basic goods by choking off foreign investment and access to essential imports. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) criticized the Trump administration’s approach as a humanitarian disaster born from decades of bipartisan policy failures, urging Congress to rein in what he called a “lawless president” to avoid war.

Progressive International’s David Adler lamented the lack of robust opposition within the U.S. to the administration’s aggressive posture, accusing the so-called “resistance” of silence in the face of threats to annihilate a peaceful nation. “What does ‘No Kings’ mean when one man can snap his fingers and kill innocent Cubans on a whim?” Adler asked.

Trump’s latest move against Cuba is yet another example of his administration’s authoritarian overreach, bypassing Congress to impose harsh foreign policy measures that punish ordinary people while serving narrow political interests. As Cuba braces for intensified economic hardship and geopolitical hostility, the world must reckon with the dangerous consequences of Trump’s reckless brinkmanship.
