Trump Labels Critical Iran War Coverage “Seditious” in Latest Media Attack
President Trump lashes out at CNN and The New York Times, calling their reporting on the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran “seditious” — a federal crime punishable by death. His latest tirade exposes a pattern of authoritarian hostility toward the free press as he tries to silence dissent over a deeply unpopular and reckless military escalation.
President Donald Trump has once again targeted the media, this time accusing major news outlets of “sedition” for their coverage of the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump singled out CNN and The New York Times, calling their reporting “seditious” and framing the outlets as enemies.
“I only watch [CNN] because you have to watch a little bit of the enemy,” Trump said, adding, “If you see CNN, you think [Iran] is winning the war. If you read The New York Times — it’s actually seditious, in my opinion.”
This attack follows The New York Times editorial board’s critical piece titled “The U.S. Military Was Losing Its Edge. After Iran, Everyone Knows It.” The editorial argued that the war exposed significant vulnerabilities in the U.S. military, noting Iran’s ability to leverage the Strait of Hormuz to inflict economic damage. While acknowledging some U.S. military successes, the piece warned that America’s adversaries now have a clear playbook for resisting U.S. power.
Experts and journalists quickly pushed back against Trump’s sedition claim. HuffPost’s Anthony Orrico pointed out that the Times’ editorial does not meet the legal definition of sedition, which involves conspiring to overthrow the government by force. Other commentators highlighted Trump’s hypocrisy, noting he pardoned individuals actually convicted of seditious conspiracy.
Trump’s long history of demonizing the press as “enemies of the American people” and calling for harsh punishments for journalists who report critically continues to undermine democratic norms. His administration has also taken steps critics say amount to censorship of dissenting voices.
Public opinion polls underscore the disconnect between Trump’s aggressive war rhetoric and the majority of Americans, who disapprove of his handling of the Iran conflict. A recent Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll found 66 percent of respondents disapprove of Trump’s war management, and 61 percent view the military action as a mistake.
As Trump tries to weaponize the charge of sedition against a free press exposing government failures and dangerous foreign policy, the stakes for democracy have never been higher. Independent media outlets like Truthout remain crucial in holding power accountable amid mounting political repression and efforts to silence critical voices.
We stand with journalists reporting the truth and urge readers to support independent news that refuses to bow to authoritarian pressure. The fight for transparency and accountability in the Trump era is far from over.
