Trump makes big mistake about Marco Rubio's son during college sports roundtable

During the Saving College Sports Roundtable on Friday, President Donald Trump humorously suggested that Marco Rubio could potentially face a "criminal charge" for participating in the discussion, given that his son plays football for Florida.

The Trump administration is striving to ensure the sustainability of college sports, following the President's repeated grievances about excessive spending on NIL deals. During the roundtable, Trump made a bold statement regarding women's sports and his granddaughter Kai.

Despite expressing concerns about colleges potentially going bankrupt, Trump, with backing from renowned football coach Nick Saban, applauded the fact that Rubio's son is earning money through NIL. He humorously pointed out that Rubio's involvement could be seen as a conflict of interest due to his son's participation in college sports. This comes after a prominent Team USA gold medalist publicly embarrassed Trump with their White House decision.

However, Trump mistakenly referred to Anthony Rubio as a "very good player", despite the fact that he is a walk-on who has only played twice for the University of Florida, reports The Mirror US.

At the end of the roundtable, Trump asserted that he could resolve every issue within a week, although he anticipates legal challenges. Before arriving at this conclusion, he jokingly suggested that Rubio's contribution could result in a serious criminal charge.

"Marco has a conflict of interest that he didn't reveal, which is a very serious charge," Trump said of his Secretary of State. "It could be a criminal charge, actually. His son is a very good player for a very good college and makes money with NIL. So, this is a serious conflict of interest. But we'll take him! We waive his conflict!".

Despite Trump's endorsement of Rubio's son, Anthony, the running back has had minimal playing time for the Gators since arriving as a preferred walk-on. Anthony Rubio has appeared in only two games since joining Florida.

Rubio sat out the 2023 season as a redshirt after receiving no playing time, but made his first appearance the next year in the Gasparilla Bowl against Tulane. He found the end zone in the fourth quarter and recorded six carries for 32 yards.

During the 2025 season, Rubio managed just 27 yards on 10 snaps, all of which came in the opening game. Whilst his collegiate career has been modest, Rubio showed promise during his high school years.

The running back played at Belen Jesuit in Miami, Florida, where he accumulated 229 carries for 1,474 yards and 14 touchdowns across three seasons. Rubio also participated in track and field, posting a notable time of 11:18 seconds in the 100 meters.

Rubio received multiple college offers but chose Florida over scholarship opportunities from Buffalo, Charlotte, and Bryant. Though his on-field contributions for the Gators have been limited, he completed his bachelor's degree in Education Sciences last year.

As Friday's roundtable wrapped up, Trump announced that the issues under discussion could be resolved within the next seven days. "I will have an executive order within one week, and it will be very all-encompassing," Trump said.

"And we're going to put it forward, and we're going to get sued, and we're going to see how it plays, okay, but I'll have an executive order which will solve every problem in this room, every conceivable problem, within one week, and we'll put it forward. We will get sued. That's the only thing I know for sure."
