US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins sparked outrage by openly celebrating the mass removal of 4.3 million Americans from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In a social media post, Rollins hailed the drop in enrollment as proof that "Americans are getting back to work" under President Trump’s leadership, claiming fewer people need government help because of a stronger economy.

But the reality tells a very different story. Independent experts and fact-checkers have thoroughly debunked Rollins’ claims, pointing to the Republican 2025 budget law as the primary driver of the historic plunge in SNAP participation. That law slashed $186 billion from the program over ten years and expanded harsh work requirements that strip benefits from vulnerable people.

Caitlin Caspi, a food insecurity researcher at the University of Connecticut, told the Associated Press that current employment numbers do not match the scale of SNAP losses. “We’re not seeing a pattern of decline in unemployment that would match the pattern of decline in SNAP participation,” she said. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) echoed this analysis, highlighting that economic conditions have not improved enough to explain the steep enrollment drop.

Instead, CBPP pointed to the GOP budget cuts shifting costs onto states and forcing people off benefits due to stricter work rules. Meanwhile, grocery prices continue to climb, partly due to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, making food less affordable for millions.

Democratic Rep. Shontel Brown condemned Rollins’ celebration as callous and out of touch. “Kicking 4.3 million Americans off SNAP is not a flex, it’s a failure,” Brown said. “Americans paid $300 more on their groceries to compensate for Trump’s tariffs.” She has introduced legislation aimed at reversing these damaging SNAP cuts.

The Trump administration’s pride in forcing millions off food aid reveals a disturbing disregard for the real human costs of their policies. While Rollins claims “America is back in business,” millions face hunger and hardship as a direct result of budget decisions that prioritize austerity over basic needs. This is not a success story — it is a crisis manufactured by political choices that sacrifice vulnerable Americans for ideological goals.
