Trump Orders Withdrawal of 5,000 US Troops from Germany After Chancellor Criticizes Iran War

In a retaliatory move following German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s sharp criticism of the US war with Iran, the Pentagon announced it will pull 5,000 troops out of Germany over the next year. This decision highlights the deepening rift between the Trump administration and European allies over the unauthorized conflict and America’s demands for greater support.

Trump Orders Withdrawal of 5,000 US Troops from Germany After Chancellor Criticizes Iran War

The Pentagon confirmed on Friday that approximately 5,000 US troops will be withdrawn from Germany within the coming six to twelve months. This reduction comes after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly condemned the US war with Iran as “ill-considered” and accused American leadership of humiliating the nation through a poorly planned conflict.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell framed the troop withdrawal as a strategic realignment based on “theater requirements and conditions on the ground.” However, the timing and context make clear this is a punitive response to Germany’s vocal dissent.

Despite the cuts, more than 30,000 US troops will remain stationed in Germany, home to the critical Ramstein Air Base, a hub for US Air Forces in Europe and NATO operations. Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius downplayed the significance of the withdrawal, calling it “foreseeable” and emphasizing Europe’s need to take greater responsibility for its security.

The friction between the Trump administration and European allies has escalated sharply since the US launched its war with Iran without consulting NATO partners. Trump has repeatedly criticized Germany, Italy, and Spain for their limited support, threatening further troop reductions in those countries as well.

Merz’s comments during a visit to a German school last week struck a nerve with Trump. The chancellor accused the US of being “humiliated” by Iran and called the war effort “ill-considered.” Trump fired back, dismissing Merz’s critique and soon after announced the troop withdrawal plan.

This is not the first time Trump has threatened to cut US forces in Germany; similar threats were made in 2020 during Angela Merkel’s tenure. The current move underscores the administration’s increasingly transactional and confrontational approach to longstanding alliances.

While Germany has allowed the use of its military infrastructure for US operations related to Iran, it has stopped short of permitting offensive strikes from its bases. Merz has pledged further German support only if the conflict moves into a post-war stabilization phase, including deploying a naval minesweeper to the Mediterranean to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s blunt dismissal of allied concerns and his willingness to use troop deployments as leverage reveal a reckless disregard for alliance cohesion and strategic stability in Europe. The withdrawal of troops from Germany is yet another sign of the unraveling of transatlantic partnerships under his watch.
