Trump Pushes Israel’s President to Pardon Netanyahu Amid Corruption Trial
Donald Trump is ramping up his campaign to get Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces serious corruption charges. Trump dismisses the trial as a “witch hunt” and urges a pardon despite Netanyahu’s lack of remorse or admission of guilt.
Donald Trump is once again pressuring Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently embroiled in a high-stakes corruption trial. According to an Axios interview, Trump framed the trial as a distraction from pressing national security concerns, calling it “wine and cigars” and insisting Netanyahu “can’t have this hanging over his head” during wartime.
Netanyahu faces charges of corruption, bribery, and breach of trust in three separate cases that could land him in prison if convicted. The indictment, filed in November 2019, has been a focal point of political turmoil in Israel. Despite the gravity of the charges, Netanyahu has neither admitted wrongdoing nor expressed remorse—both key conditions for receiving a pardon under Israeli law.
Trump has been advocating for Netanyahu’s pardon since June last year, likening the Israeli leader’s legal troubles to his own “witch hunt” in the United States. His rhetoric has shifted from harsh criticism of Herzog—calling him “weak and pathetic” and “a disgrace” for refusing to pardon Netanyahu—to a softer approach, suggesting Herzog “will be a national hero” if he grants clemency.
This push comes as Israel prepares for elections in October, where Netanyahu’s political future and potential prison sentence hang in the balance. The trial session was even cut short recently to allow Netanyahu to participate in security consultations related to an aid flotilla heading to Gaza, underscoring how he is juggling legal battles with national security issues.
Trump’s interference highlights a troubling pattern of undermining judicial processes to protect allies, echoing his own attempts to evade accountability. His demands for a pardon not only flout legal norms but also threaten democratic principles by pressuring foreign leaders to shield politicians from justice.
As Netanyahu’s trial continues, Trump’s relentless campaign exposes the lengths to which he will go to defend corrupt leaders, further eroding trust in the rule of law both at home and abroad.
