Trump Pushes Tennessee GOP to Redraw Congressional Map for Extra Seat

President Trump is urging Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to redraw the state’s congressional districts to secure another Republican seat, following a Supreme Court ruling against Louisiana’s majority-black district. This move is part of a broader GOP strategy to reshape maps mid-decade and cement their hold on Congress ahead of the 2024 elections.

President Donald Trump is once again calling on Republican-led states to redraw congressional maps mid-decade — this time targeting Tennessee. On Thursday, Trump announced that Tennessee Governor Bill Lee will redraw the state’s congressional districts to add an extra GOP seat, a move designed to strengthen Republican control in Congress.

"This should give us one extra seat, and help Save our Country from the Radical Left Democrats, and their Country destroying Policies of High Tax, Open Borders, Transgender Mutilization, Defunding the Police, ICE, and Border Patrol, No Voter ID, Soft on Crime, and so much more. Thank you Governor Lee — PUSH HARD! President DONALD J. TRUMP," the former president posted on social media.

Trump’s push follows a Supreme Court decision on Wednesday that struck down Louisiana’s congressional map for racial gerrymandering. The 6-3 ruling invalidated the creation of a second majority-black district, a move that had been enforced under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Louisiana’s Republican governor and attorney general have vowed to redraw their map accordingly.

Tennessee currently has eight Republican-held House seats and only one Democrat, giving the GOP a strong advantage. But Trump and other Tennessee Republicans, including Senator Marsha Blackburn who is running for governor, want to further cement that dominance. Blackburn tweeted her support for redistricting efforts aimed at gaining another Republican seat in Memphis, calling it essential to preserving Trump’s agenda and keeping Tennessee a red state.

This aggressive redistricting push is part of a broader GOP strategy. Last year, Trump urged Republican states to redraw maps outside the usual post-census cycle to shore up their slim House majority ahead of the 2024 midterms. States like Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri, and Texas have already approved new maps favoring Republicans, while Florida is in the process of redistricting. Meanwhile, Democrats have redrawn districts in California and Virginia to their advantage.

Governor Lee’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the redistricting plans. But if Tennessee follows the path of other GOP states, the redrawing of congressional lines will likely deepen partisan divides and further weaken democratic representation — all under the guise of legal compliance after the Supreme Court’s recent ruling.

This is not just about politics as usual. It’s a calculated effort to entrench Republican power by manipulating electoral boundaries, undermining fair representation, and pushing Trump’s agenda in Congress. And Tennessee is now the latest battleground in this ongoing war over America’s democracy.
