Trump Recycles Debunked Murderer Count to Exploit Grieving Moms in Rose Garden Spectacle
Trump shamelessly repeated his false claim that nearly 12,000 immigrant murderers entered the U.S., using grieving mothers as props in a Rose Garden event. Despite multiple fact-checks disproving this figure, the former president weaponizes grief and fear to fuel his anti-immigrant agenda — all for his own political gain.
At a White House Rose Garden luncheon meant to honor motherhood, Donald Trump stooped to a new low by repeating a thoroughly debunked lie about immigrant crime. Addressing a group that included Gold Star Moms and so-called “Angel Moms” mourning children lost to violent crimes, Trump claimed “11,888 murderers were allowed in our country” — a number he has cited repeatedly despite being disproven.
This figure has no basis in fact. As NPR and other outlets have confirmed, there is no evidence supporting Trump’s precise count of immigrant murderers. The Department of Homeland Security’s records include hundreds of thousands of noncitizens with criminal records, many legally present and covering decades of arrests — many for minor offenses, not murder. Yet Trump persists in using this fabricated statistic to stoke fear and justify his harsh immigration policies.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson doubled down, insisting Trump’s number reflects “countless criminal illegal aliens” under the Biden administration. But the administration’s own data does not support the claim, making clear this is a political talking point, not a factual statement.
Trump’s lies extend beyond numbers. He also falsely accused the Biden administration of “emptying the prisons of the Congo” and deliberately allowing “hard, mean, vicious criminals” to cross the southern border, a baseless fear-mongering tactic designed to stir outrage among his base.
Worse still, Trump’s exploitation of grieving mothers for political theater is morally repugnant. These women, who have endured unimaginable loss, were used as props to lend emotional weight to a lie that serves only to advance Trump’s self-serving agenda. His repeated falsehoods about immigration and crime are not just inaccurate — they are a cynical manipulation of real pain and loss.
This event, set against the backdrop of a sunny garden and blooming roses, was darkened by the shadow of Trump’s dishonesty. It is a stark reminder that for Trump, facts and empathy are expendable when weighed against political gain. We owe it to the truth and to those truly affected by violence to call out this kind of exploitation and demand accountability.
