Trump threatens higher tariffs on countries following SCOTUS decision - The National Desk
President Donald Trump threatened to impose higher tariffs on countries that he believes are "playing games" following a Supreme Court ruling that limited his authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The court's 6-3 decision ruled that Trump did not have the authority to unilaterally impose such tariffs, prompting Trump to consider using other laws to maintain tariffs and to threaten a 10% global tariff as a response. Trump criticized the court's decision and expressed his intention to increase tariffs to recover additional revenue.
WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Monday threatened higher tariffs on other countries following the recent Supreme Court decision.
“Any Country that wants to “play games” with the ridiculous supreme court decision, especially those that have “Ripped Off” the U.S.A. for years, and even decades, will be met with a much higher Tariff, and worse, than that which they just recently agreed to,” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social.
Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump did not have the right under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs in a 6-3 ruling.
"Americans fought the revolution in no small part because they believed that only their elected representatives (not the king, not even parliament) possessed authority to tax them,” Chief Justice Roberts wrote in the opinion.
The president said he would look to use other laws to try to keep the tariffs in place.
On Friday, Trump said he would impose a 10% global tariff in response to the Supreme Court ruling.
"Their decision was ridiculous but, now the adjustment process begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before," he wrote,” he wrote in a previous TRUTH Social post.
He said he was ashamed of the SCOUTS ruling.
"I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” Trump said. “They’re very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution."
