Donald Trump’s administration is pushing the United States dangerously closer to full-scale war with Iran. According to Axios, Trump’s top military advisers are preparing to brief him on aggressive new plans that include deploying ground troops to forcibly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil chokepoint currently under Iranian control. Another option on the table involves sending special operations forces deep into Iran to confiscate its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, a move that would almost certainly provoke a fierce Iranian military response.

These proposals mark a sharp escalation from previous US tactics and reflect a pattern of reckless brinkmanship designed to force Iran back to the negotiating table on its nuclear program. CENTCOM’s strategy reportedly calls for “short and powerful” strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure, aiming to coerce Tehran into concessions. But the risk of a wider regional war and catastrophic energy disruptions looms large.

Tehran’s leadership is not backing down. Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, declared that the only place for Americans in the Persian Gulf is “at the bottom of its waters,” signaling zero tolerance for the US naval blockade. Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf emphasized Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz as a guarantee of freedom from American interference, framing it as a historic victory over colonial powers.

The conflict’s economic stakes are staggering. Brent crude oil prices have surged to a four-year high, topping $120 per barrel, sparking warnings from the International Energy Agency about the potential for the “biggest energy crisis in history.” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s head, highlighted the global economic pressure this crisis could unleash, especially on vulnerable countries.

Meanwhile, Trump’s bellicose rhetoric extends beyond Iran. He publicly mocked Germany’s chancellor Friedrich Merz as a “broken country” after Merz criticized the US for being “humiliated” by Iran. Trump’s threats to withdraw US troops from Germany signal a broader pattern of undermining long-standing alliances in pursuit of unilateral military posturing.

The Trump administration’s pursuit of military escalation with Iran is a reckless gamble with global peace and economic stability. Rather than pursuing diplomatic solutions, Trump appears intent on using war as a distraction from domestic scandals and a tool to consolidate power. The consequences of this approach could be catastrophic for millions both in the Middle East and around the world.

We will continue to track developments closely and hold this administration accountable for every reckless step toward war.
