Trump Threatens to Slam EU with 25 Percent Car Tariffs, Escalating Trade Chaos
Donald Trump announced plans to hike tariffs on European cars and trucks from 15 to 25 percent, citing alleged EU noncompliance with a trade deal. The move risks inflaming transatlantic tensions and punishing American consumers and workers already battered by trade wars and economic disruption.
In another reckless escalation of his trade war antics, former President Donald Trump declared on his social media platform Truth Social that he will raise import tariffs on European Union cars and trucks to 25 percent starting next week. The current tariff stands at 15 percent.
Trump justified the hike by accusing the EU of failing to comply with a “fully agreed to Trade Deal,” though details of this supposed breach remain vague. He emphasized that vehicles made in the United States would remain tariff-free and touted over $100 billion in investments in domestic auto and truck plants as a shield against the tariff’s impact.
The European Commission swiftly pushed back, with a spokesperson asserting that the EU is “implementing its joint statement commitments in line with standard legislative practice” and keeping the US informed throughout. The EU reiterated its commitment to a “predictable, mutually beneficial transatlantic relationship,” but warned it would not hesitate to protect its interests if the US took “inconsistent” measures.
Bernd Lange, Socialist chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade, condemned Trump’s threat as “unacceptable,” calling out the US for repeatedly breaking commitments even with close partners. “While the EU delivers, the US side keeps breaking its commitments,” Lange said on X, urging the EU to respond with “clarity and firmness.”
This tariff threat comes just weeks after the European Parliament ratified the trade deal, following a pause triggered by Trump’s Greenland gambit. It also follows a recent visit by European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič to Washington for talks with senior US trade officials, underscoring the unpredictability and volatility of US trade policy under Trump’s influence.
Trump’s tariff escalation is more than a negotiation tactic—it is a blunt instrument that disrupts global supply chains, raises prices for American consumers, and risks retaliatory tariffs that could further harm US workers and allies. This move fits a broader pattern of Trump’s trade policies, which have prioritized short-term political posturing over economic stability and international cooperation.
At a time when American families are already squeezed by inflation and economic uncertainty, threatening to raise tariffs on key imports is a reckless gamble that will only deepen economic chaos and undermine democratic accountability in trade policymaking. The EU’s warning signals that this fight is far from over—and that Trump’s trade tantrums carry real consequences beyond his Twitter feed.
