Trump Unveils Plans for a 250-Foot “Independence Arch” That Would Tower Over Lincoln Memorial
Donald Trump’s administration is pushing a massive 250-foot triumphal arch in D.C., designed to overshadow the iconic Lincoln Memorial. The gilded monument, emblazoned with “One Nation Under God,” signals yet another grandiose project aimed at stamping Trump’s legacy on the capital — even as critics warn it would disrupt historic views and symbolize authoritarian self-aggrandizement.
Donald Trump’s latest monument mania is on full display with plans for a gargantuan triumphal arch across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial. The so-called “Independence Arch” would soar 250 feet tall — more than double the height of Lincoln’s 100-foot statue — and is intended to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
The design, revealed by Trump’s administration last Friday, is a blatant copy of Paris’s Arc de Triomphe and New York’s Soldiers and Sailors' Memorial Arch, decked out with four gilded lions at its base and a winged Lady Liberty statue atop. The arch’s entablature bears a gold inscription reading “One Nation Under God,” a phrase that aligns with Trump’s penchant for blending nationalism and religious rhetoric.
This isn’t just about architecture. The site for the arch — a traffic roundabout on Columbia Island — has been eyed for memorials for over a century, but the Trump administration’s push to place this colossal symbol there signals a desire to rewrite the capital’s visual and symbolic landscape. Opponents warn that the arch’s sheer size will obstruct views of the revered Lincoln Memorial, a monument to unity and democracy.
The Interior Department has already filed plans with the Commission of Fine Arts, a federal panel packed with Trump appointees, raising concerns about the impartiality of the review process. The commission will consider the proposal next week, but given the political makeup, approval seems likely.
Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has made clear his obsession with monumentalizing his presidency. From plans to demolish the White House East Wing for a $400 million ballroom to shuttering the Kennedy Center for renovations, Trump’s vision for Washington is less about preserving history and more about stamping his personality on it.
This arch is more than stone and gold. It’s a physical manifestation of Trump’s authoritarian impulse to dominate public space and rewrite national narratives in his own image. As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, this monument threatens to overshadow not just Lincoln’s legacy but the democratic ideals he represents.
