Trump Whines About Supreme Court Blocking His $160 Billion Tariff Grab
Donald Trump is still seething over the Supreme Court striking down his illegal tariff scheme, which forced him to cough up $160 billion in refunds to corporate giants like Nike and Walmart. Despite the court ruling, Trump doubles down on his grift, calling the decision “terrible” and fantasizing about keeping the money anyway.
At a recent White House small business summit, Donald Trump vented his frustration over the Supreme Court’s rejection of his tariff policy, which he once boasted would “Make America Great Again” by slapping foreign imports with heavy fees. The court ruled that Trump had no authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose those tariffs, which were meant to punish China and other trading partners.
The blowback was immediate and costly: the government must refund approximately $160 billion to importers including major retailers like Nike, Walmart, and Home Depot. Trump, 79, called the ruling “terrible” and said he hated having to pay the money back, even fantasizing about a legal loophole that would have let the government keep it. “We would have saved $159 billion, and I cannot figure it out. How could anybody do that? But they did it,” he griped.
After the court’s decision, the Trump administration pivoted to imposing a 15 percent tariff under the 1974 Trade Act, which Trump claims is “a little bit more complex” but “better.” Still, the legal defeat exposed the administration’s blatant disregard for the law in pursuit of economic chaos and corporate cronyism.
Trump’s bitterness extends beyond tariffs. On his Truth Social platform, he recently lambasted the justices for a pending case on birthright citizenship, accusing them of “nasty, one sided questions” and calling the constitutional right “stupid” and “country destroying.” This, despite the fact that the Supreme Court has yet to issue a ruling on the matter.
Trump’s attacks on the courts reveal a pattern: when the law stands in the way of his agenda or personal gain, he lashes out, undermining democratic norms and the rule of law. His tariff fiasco alone has cost American taxpayers billions and disrupted global trade, all while enriching a handful of corporations.
The Supreme Court’s decision was a rare check on Trump’s overreach, but his refusal to accept it and his ongoing efforts to manipulate the system show why vigilance and accountability remain urgent. We will keep tracking every attempt by Trump and his allies to bend laws, courts, and institutions to their corrupt will.
