Trump’s $1 Billion Ballroom Boondoggle: Another Taxpayer Rip-Off

Trump promised his White House ballroom would cost taxpayers nothing. Instead, after secret demolition and ballooning expenses, Senate Republicans are poised to dump a $1 billion price tag on American taxpayers. This is just the latest in a long line of Trump’s broken promises and reckless spending that’s doubling the national debt and leaving everyday Americans to foot the bill.

Trump’s $1 Billion Ballroom Boondoggle: Another Taxpayer Rip-Off

Remember when Donald Trump vowed his new White House ballroom would be funded entirely by private donors, sparing taxpayers any cost? That was never true. As San Benito resident and watchdog Joe Rodriguez reports, Trump began tearing down the East Wing in the dead of night in 2025 without congressional approval or permits—classic Trump disregard for rules and transparency.

Initially pegged at $200 million, the ballroom’s price tag quickly escalated to $400 million, all under the false claim that private donors would foot the bill. But by May 2026, a Senate committee proposed allocating up to $1 billion in taxpayer dollars to cover “security features” linked to the project. Suddenly, Trump’s “gift to America” is a taxpayer-funded vanity project, another “Big Lie” following his false claims about the 2020 election.

Meanwhile, Trump’s Republican allies in Congress push to let Obamacare expire, slash funding for cancer research, food assistance, and education—all while funneling billions into Trump’s pet projects. The administration has already spent about $25 billion on the undeclared war with Iran, a conflict that experts say could ultimately cost $1 trillion, further ballooning the national debt.

Trump promised to eliminate the national debt but instead doubled it from $19.9 trillion in 2017 to over $39 trillion today, with $40 trillion looming by the midterms. Yet here we are, poised to spend another billion on a Trump-branded building—joining a growing list of taxpayer-funded Trump monuments that serve only to enrich his ego.

This is corruption and waste at its finest. Taxpayers deserve better than to bankroll Trump’s self-enrichment schemes disguised as public projects.
