Trump’s Election Fraud Lies Fuel Federal Power Grab to Override States

President Trump’s latest cry of “rigged” after Virginia’s redistricting vote is just the latest in a long line of baseless election fraud claims designed to undermine trust in democracy and expand federal control over elections. Despite the Constitution granting states the primary authority over the “times, places and manner” of voting, Trump’s administration has repeatedly sought to override that authority, using fraud allegations as a pretext to interfere in state election processes.

Courts and election officials have consistently found no evidence of widespread fraud. Yet the Department of Justice has demanded sensitive voter information from nearly every state, including registration rolls, ballots, and even driver’s license data — threatening to share it with Homeland Security. When states refuse, the DOJ sues them.

Federal agents have seized ballots and launched investigations in counties that voted heavily for Biden in 2020 — Fulton County, Georgia; Maricopa County, Arizona; and Wayne County, Michigan — despite audits and court rulings confirming the legitimacy of those elections. These moves are thinly veiled attempts to sow doubt and justify federal intervention in future elections.

Meanwhile, the administration has weakened key election security institutions. Officials tasked with protecting election integrity have been purged or replaced by political activists and election deniers. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, once a bulwark against misinformation, has been gutted. The FBI’s public corruption and foreign interference units have been shuttered or sidelined, replaced by baseless conspiracy theories.

These federal actions come with serious consequences. Polls show a majority of Republicans believe Trump won in 2020, fear voter fraud, and support federal law enforcement presence at polling places. Alarmingly, only a third of young voters across parties trust that future elections will be fair.

The erosion of confidence in elections threatens the very foundation of democracy. Without trust, losing candidates refuse to concede, winners face legitimacy crises, and voter participation declines. Restoring faith will be a monumental task — and the clock is ticking.

The Trump administration’s election fraud claims are not just lies. They are a coordinated strategy to undermine democracy and seize control of the electoral process. We must expose and resist this authoritarian playbook before it’s too late.
