Trump’s Election Lies Are a Blueprint for Undermining Democracy
Trump’s baseless claims of voter fraud are not isolated rants but a coordinated strategy to seize control over elections. From demanding sensitive voter data to weaponizing federal agencies, the administration is actively dismantling safeguards and sowing distrust to rig future races.
President Trump’s latest outburst calling the Virginia redistricting vote “rigged” is far from a one-off tantrum. It’s part of a broader, relentless campaign to undermine American democracy by casting doubt on election outcomes whenever Republicans lose. As Trump claimed without evidence, Democrats secured a “crooked victory” through a “massive mail-in ballot Drop,” echoing his long-standing mantra that elections are stolen whenever they don’t go his way.
But this is not just about rhetoric. The Trump administration has aggressively sought to override state control of elections—a power explicitly granted to states by the Constitution—by demanding sweeping access to voter registration rolls, ballots, and even driver’s license data. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has sued nearly 30 states and the District of Columbia for refusing to comply, threatening to centralize control over voting data and processes under federal oversight.
Federal law enforcement has also been weaponized to intimidate and investigate counties that reliably vote Democratic. In 2026, FBI agents seized ballots from Fulton County, Georgia, despite multiple audits confirming the integrity of the 2020 election. Similar raids and subpoenas targeted Maricopa County, Arizona, and Wayne County, Michigan—places where Biden won by significant margins and where election results have been certified and litigated repeatedly.
These actions are thinly veiled attempts to manufacture doubt and justify federal intervention in future elections. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the investigations “a poorly disguised attempt” to spread misinformation and interfere with upcoming races. The administration’s claims often rely on debunked conspiracy theories, ignoring the fact that alleged fraud cases have been prosecuted or dismissed for lack of evidence.
At the same time, the Trump administration has gutted key institutions designed to protect election integrity. By 2025, nearly all officials in the Justice and Homeland Security departments responsible for election security had been replaced by political loyalists and election deniers. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, once a bulwark against election interference, was eviscerated, and the FBI’s units monitoring election-day corruption and foreign meddling were shuttered.
This systematic dismantling of safeguards, combined with false claims “coming with the seal of the federal government,” has deeply eroded public trust. Polling shows that a staggering majority of Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen, fear widespread fraud, and support federal law enforcement at polling places. Confidence in elections among young voters is alarmingly low across party lines.
Without trust in the fairness of elections, democracy itself is at risk. Losing candidates may refuse to concede, winners may lack legitimacy, and voters may disengage altogether. Restoring confidence will be a monumental challenge, but it’s one that Democrats and defenders of democracy must tackle urgently.
The clock is ticking, and the assault on our elections is just getting started.
