Trump’s Election Rigging Playbook: Why the Midterms Are Under Siege

The midterm elections are shaping up to be a battleground not just for votes but for the very soul of American democracy. Donald Trump, battered by low approval ratings and a dysfunctional Republican Congress, is doubling down on a familiar playbook: rigging the system to keep power at any cost.

First, there was gerrymandering—the cynical redrawing of districts to pick voters, not the other way around. While Democrats have fought back in states like California and Virginia, the recent Callais Supreme Court decision threatens to blow up the Voting Rights Act, clearing the way for racial gerrymandering that could erase Black districts in the South.

Next, Trump has tried to seize control of the election machinery itself. His executive orders aiming to wrest power from states have been blocked by courts, and his SAVE America Act stalled in the Senate. Still, he’s pushing to undermine mail-in voting through the Postal Service and impose restrictive photo ID laws—all based on debunked claims of rampant voter fraud.

Alarmingly, some Republican officials in key states are cooperating with Trump’s demands to hand over election records for dubious purges, sparking legal battles. The danger is that these tactics collectively suppress turnout, especially among communities of color and young voters.

But the nightmare scenario goes further. Some fear Trump could exploit a national emergency—real or manufactured—to suspend or delay the election. Secret Presidential Emergency Action Documents (PEADs), designed for nuclear crises, could be weaponized to justify authoritarian moves like banning mail ballots or seizing voting machines with ICE agents. While courts have so far blocked Trump’s overreach, the risk of a last-minute coup attempt remains a chilling possibility.

Most democracy defenders see the bigger threat in everyday voter suppression: purges, intimidation, polling place closures, and confusing mail-in ballot rules. Secretaries of state and pro-democracy groups are preparing for these battles, emphasizing the need to maintain public confidence and turnout.

As Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar warns, the mere fear of ICE raids or chaos at the polls can depress turnout without any direct action. Trump’s playbook is clear: sow fear, suppress votes, and cling to power.

This November, the fight isn’t just about who wins seats—it’s about whether American democracy survives the assault. We’ll be watching every move to hold these authoritarian tactics accountable and keep the vote free and fair.
