Trump's Gas Price Posts: Old Gripes, New Lies, and a Fake Tweet You Shouldn't Believe
As gas prices surge amid tensions with Iran, a viral post claiming Trump advised "driving downhill" to save gas is a total fabrication. Meanwhile, Trump recycles his old Obama-era complaints and downplays the real pain of rising fuel costs tied to his own reckless foreign policy.
The price of gas is climbing, and Donald Trump is once again stirring the pot on social media. But before you share that viral post about Trump giving "very smart tips" to save gas — including driving downhill — stop. It’s fake.
An image circulating on X (formerly Twitter) shows a May 1 post, supposedly from Trump’s account, advising Americans to keep tires inflated, fill tanks at night, and drive downhill to conserve fuel. The post has millions of views but does not appear on Trump’s official X or Truth Social accounts. The formatting also doesn’t match the platform’s current style, confirming it’s a fabrication.
What about Trump’s actual words on gas prices? Back when Barack Obama was president, Trump repeatedly attacked him for high gas prices. One real Tweet still live today demands Obama be fired over fuel costs. That old grievance has resurfaced as gas prices climb again.
The current spike in prices is tied largely to the war in Iran and the resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping lane. U.S. and Israeli military strikes have escalated tensions, pushing prices higher. On May 5, the national average hit $4.48 per gallon, with Californians paying over $6 in some places.
Trump has downplayed the pain at the pump, calling the higher prices "a very small price to pay" for eliminating Iran’s nuclear threat. He also promised prices will "come crashing down" once the conflict ends. But more than two months into the war, prices remain high, and Trump’s promises ring hollow.
The reality is that Trump’s own reckless foreign policy moves are fueling the crisis, yet he tries to dodge responsibility by spreading misinformation and recycling old attacks. The fake "drive downhill" post is just the latest attempt to distract from the truth: Americans are paying more while Trump plays political games.
We’ll keep tracking the lies and half-truths as they come. Don’t fall for the fakes. Hold Trump accountable for the real damage his actions cause.
