Trump’s Iran Nuclear Deal Exit Fueled Massive Uranium Stockpile Growth
Since Trump tore up the Iran nuclear deal, Tehran’s enriched uranium stockpile has exploded from 660 pounds to 11 tons, edging dangerously close to weapons-grade levels. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s claims that Iran was on the verge of a nuclear bomb remain contradicted and unproven, exposing reckless policy and a mounting crisis.
The Trump administration’s decision to abandon the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran has had catastrophic consequences. Nearly a decade after Trump pulled out of the deal, Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile has ballooned from the 660-pound cap set by the Obama-era agreement to an estimated 11 tons, according to a recent New York Times report.
When Trump ripped up the deal in 2018, Iran did not have enough material to build a single nuclear weapon. Now, not only has the quantity of uranium skyrocketed, but the enrichment level has also climbed dangerously close to weapons-grade—a threshold that would enable nuclear bomb production.
Despite the Trump administration’s repeated claims that Iran posed an imminent nuclear threat justifying military action, there is no evidence Iran has developed a nuclear weapon. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent testimony before Congress exposed the administration’s contradictory messaging. When pressed by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) about the uranium stockpile increase, Hegseth deflected, calling the information classified, even though public estimates are available.
Moreover, amid ongoing conflict with the U.S. and Israel, Iran may have moved its enriched uranium to undisclosed locations, complicating monitoring efforts. When Pentagon correspondent Jennifer Griffin asked Hegseth if the U.S. had certainty that no uranium was relocated following last year’s strikes on Iranian facilities, Hegseth launched a personal attack instead of providing answers.
This pattern of stonewalling and misinformation typifies the Trump administration’s handling of the Iran conflict. They insist victory is near, dismiss critics as wrong, and push for continued military engagement—all while the nuclear threat they warned of has grown exponentially due to their own reckless policies.
Trump’s Iran policy has not only failed to prevent nuclear escalation but has actively fueled it. The consequences of this dangerous gamble are now unfolding, and the American public deserves accountability for a strategy that has brought the world closer to nuclear peril.
